Salt Lake City officially announced as site for 2034 Winter Olympics

In an expected announcement the International Olympic Committee (IOC) officially awarded the 2034 Winter Olympics to Salt Lake City on Wednesday morning of July 24, 2024. The date coincides with a cultural celebration of the pioneers arriving in the Salt Lake Valley as the area and the region will host their second Olympics after a successful introduction to the world in 2002.

In recent years there has been a lack of interested candidates willing to put forth the effort to host the Winter Games and the organizers of the Salt Lake City pitch capitalized on this as well as their ability to host world class winter events in the area using facilities that were built for the previous games such as the Olympic Oval in Kearns and the ski jumping facilities in Park City. This also bodes well for Salt Lake City to become a regular host as one proposal to the IOC has suggested a regular permanent rotation of cities in the world.

Olympic Games Executive Director Christophe Dubi had said Salt Lake City would be a prime candidate for such a plan.

The announcement comes just two days before the opening ceremonies of the 2024 Summer Games in Paris who have not hosted since 1924.
