• Ruth Brown honored by friends, neighbors, and the Town of Thayne
After being honored as Grand Marshall in the Thayne Independence Day Parade, Ruth Brown recently celebrated her 100th birthday with friends and community.
Ruth’s week-long celebration began on her actual birthday, Wednesday, July 17, with a gathering of her family. She was then able to celebrate with community members, family and friends the following Friday at the Thayne Wyoming Stake Center for a couple of hours.
Ruth, who had a steady stream of loved ones waiting to greet her, reminisced about her childhood in Thayne. “I went to school in a covered wagon, then a sleigh in the winter,” she fondly recalled.
Her father was Alf Walton, who started Dad’s Bar in Thayne in 1933 and her mother was Lena Walton.
Ruth met Keith Brown, who was from Fairview, at a dance in Pinedale following his service in World War II and they were married January 1, 1947. They eventually spent most of their years in Lakewood, CA raising their family. They would visit Star Valley for many weeks throughout the Summers until Keith passed away 6 1/2 years ago. Ruth continues to reside in their California home, but comes home to Star Valley during the warm summer months. Ruth is thrilled to have the home where she was born and raised back in her possession, always considering Star Valley her true “home.”
With a century of wisdom, experiences, and resilience, including surviving breast cancer and living between Star Valley and California, Ruth has an amazing support system. Her children, Joyce (Oklahoma), Allen (California), and Brian (Utah), along with countless other family members and friends, form a strong network around her.
She has nine grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and two great, great grandchildren
While taking a few minutes to talk during Friday’s birthday celebrations, she said, “I just can’t believe this–it’s just wonderful.”
Her sharp mind and the obvious affection from her large circle of loved ones made the event special. With dozens in attendance, Ruth’s warmth and love made everyone feel like part of her family.
