SVHS Golf swings into Green River this week

• Other Fall sports begin practice August 19

The 2024-25 athletic year is underway as Star Valley High School Golf began their first sanctioned practice on Monday. The Braves and Lady Braves are slated to begin competition this week as they travel to Green River for a two-day tournament on Thursday and Friday. The golf teams across Wyoming begin this week, as does the 4A football schools, with the remainder of the sports and classifications starting on Monday August 19.

Afton is the host site of 4A State Golf this year on September 20-21 at Valli Vu Golf Course.

Here is a recap and look at what is coming up as the teams now prep for a new school year and the 2024 Fall season.

Golf: 

Teams must qualify to compete at State in the 4A classification. The Lady Braves qualified last season and placed sixth overall with a score of 611. Sheridan won the team title last year with a score of 511. Jordyn Horsley placed 10th overall as a junior with a score of 185.

The Braves also placed sixth at State which was held in Sheridan. The boys finished with a team score of 671. Cheyenne East won the boys title with a 625. PJ Horsley led the team with a 160 which was good for 12th overall. Sean Stout (179) and Aiden DeCora (181) are the top returning state qualifiers.

The last team championships for SVHS came in 2004 for both the girls and boys teams. The girls golf team has won five titles in their history with the boys winning three.

Volleyball: 

The Lady Braves won a total of 28 matches last season which included a third-place finish at the 4A West Regionals and a victory over Cheyenne East at State. Laramie won the team title in a five-set thriller over Thunder Basin with 4A West champion Cody placing third with a 3-1 win over Kelly Walsh. The Lady Braves have won nine team titles in their program history with the last one coming in 2016.

Cokeville claimed their program’s 26th overall state championship in the 1A classification with a sweep of Little Snake River. Upton defeated Southeast for third place. The Panthers dropped just one set over the State weekend going (9-1) on their title run.

The Braves runners are gunning for their third straight 4A state title as they dominated the field in 2023 with their five top runners finishing in the field’s top eight overall. Habtamu Wetzel is the returning champ and teammate Jase Burton was second and both will be back for a senior season. Colton Cranney is also back for his junior season. Matt Heywood is back as a senior as well. The Braves have won nine team titles overall

The Lady Braves finished ninth as a team in the 4A class but returns their entire varsity team. Kaitlyn Bach is eligible to return for her senior season after leading the team at the State race in Cheyenne. Carlee Angell is a returning sophomore with Alexis Angell returning as a senior. Grace Visser is back as a junior and Kylee Linford is back as a sophomore. The Lady Braves last XC title came in 2017. The Lady Braves have three team titles overall. The Natrona Fillies won last year’s team title.

Football: 

The Braves return five All-State selections as they try and do something the program has not done since the 1960’s, win three state titles in a row. They have defeated the Cody Broncs for the last two titles. The team has gone (21-3) in the last two seasons en route to winning the last two 3A state titles. Smith McClure (QB), Bryson Nield (WR), Garrett Carlson (OL), Cooper Lawson (DL) and Grant Thomson (LB) are those returning selections. The program has 18 overall team titles including six since 2015.

The Cokeville Panthers enter their fifth season after opting into the 2A classification starting in the 2020 campaign. The team advanced to the playoff last season before falling on the road to eventual state champion Torrington, 21-14. The Panthers last state title came in 2014.
