2024 Wyoming Primary Election Results

The Wyoming Secretary of State’s Office has released unofficial results for the August 20 Wyoming Primary Election. Results remain unofficial until certified by the Secretary of State. A total of 4,698 ballots were cast in Lincoln County, with 122,693 statewide.

In local races, Mel Shumway won in a close race for Lincoln County Commissioner, defeating incumbent Jerry Hansen. Shumway won by less than 100 votes, finishing with 1,328 to Hansen’s 1,230. Joe Heward finished with 836 votes while Eileen Merritt collected 808. Just one seat is up for election in the Lincoln County Commission.

In local races for the Wyoming Legislature, McKay Erickson defeated T. Deb Wolfley for House District 21 in the Wyoming Legislature. Erickson received 1,811 votes to Wolfley’s 559. House District 21 covers Star Valley communities from Smoot to southern Etna. The seat was previously held by Rep. Lane Allred who did not seek re-election. Also in Star Valley, Rep. Andrew Byron ran unopposed for House District 22, covering northern Star Valley and southern Teton County. Sen. Dan Dockstader also ran unopposed for Senate District 16 in Star Valley.

In southern Lincoln County, Laura Taliaferro Pearson of Kemmerer edged current Speaker of the House Albert Sommers of Pinedale for Senate District 14. Pearson received 2,211 total votes compared to Sommers’ 2,025. Bill Winney finished the race with 490 votes. Senate District 14 covers Cokeville and southern Lincoln County along with Sublette County. Representative Scott Heiner retained his seat for House District 18 in southern Lincoln County and portions of Uinta and Sweetwater counties. Heiner defeated challenger Thomas Crank with a total of 1,190 votes compared to Crank’s 733.

All local races were on the Republican ticket. No Democrats ran for any of the above mentioned races.

In statewide races, U.S. Senator John Barrasso won the Republican ticket in a landslide, defeating challengers Reid Rasner and John Holtz. Barrasso received 70,473 votes, Rasner 25,424 and Holtz 7,867. In Lincoln County, Barrasso received 2,935 votes, Rasner 1,133 and Holtz 236. On the Democratic ticket, Scott D Morrow ran unopposed for the U.S. Senate seat, receiving 10,088 votes statewide and 140 votes in Lincoln County. U.S. Congresswoman Harriet Hageman soundly defeated challenger Steven R. Helling for the Republican ticket in Wyoming’s lone seat in the United States House of Representatives. Hageman defeated Helling 82,765 votes to 19,738. In Lincoln County, Hageman received 2,935 votes compared to Helling’s 597. Kyle G. Cameron won on the Democratic side for U.S. House with 10,047 votes statewide and 135 in Lincoln County.
