A haystack caught fire early Monday morning at Shumway Farms in Osmond. Afton Fire Chief Cody Wilkes said the department was dispatched to the scene at roughly 3:50 a.m.
According to Wilkes, lightning struck in the middle of a stack of large round bails, igniting a fire that began to spread in all directions. Firefighters immediately began to spray the fire while working to move hay that had not yet caught fire. Nearby neighbors also pitched in with their own equipment to help move hay from the flames. Wilkes said approximately 20-25 bails were lost in the fire, however about 50 were saved.
Once the fire was put out, an irrigation sprinkler was set up to continue to water down the hay. Chief Wilkes said the hay will likely continue to smoke for a couple of days.
Firefighters were on scene until approximately 8:00 a.m. No injuries were reported.
