• Locals compete in Montpelier, ID
The 2024-2025 high school rodeo season began on Saturday for local athletes. The season, which includes fall and spring events, opened up with a double header on Saturday, August 14 in Montpelier. High School athletes from Star Valley, Cokeville and various high schools in Southeast Idaho competed.
Star Valley’s Brooklyn Brown of Afton made some noise to open the season, finishing in 6th place in the first rodeo and 5th place in the second in the Breakaway Roping event. Brown finished with a time of 15.10 and 5.880 respectively. She also finished in 8th place in the first rodeo in the Goat Tying event with a time of 11.040.
Bridget Scaffide of Alpine had a top 10 finish in Barrel Racing, coming in 6th with a time of 18.395 in the second rodeo of the day. Scaffide also placed 7th in Pole Bending with a time of 29.935 and 10th in the second rodeo with a 24.637. Jill Jackson of Etna picked up points with a 6th place finish in Goat Tying in the second rodeo with a time of 11.270. Taylar Nate of Cokeville finished 10th in the same event with a time of 13.790.
On the boys side, Ross Hilton started the season off strong in team roping, coming in 1st place in the morning rodeo with a time of 9.520 and 2nd place that afternoon with a 9.760. Hilton Team Ropes with Kruz Smith of Montpelier. Fresh off their top 10 finish at the National High School Finals Rodeo this summer, Ryder and Case Kerr had a no time in Team Roping in the first rodeo but came back strong in the second with a time of 13.190, good enough for a 3rd place finish. Cinch Pope from Cokeville, roping with McKade Crane of Montpelier, finished the second rodeo with a time of 25.010 and a 4th place finish.
Cinch Pope also had the fastest time of the first rodeo in Tie Down Roping with a 17.090, followed by Ross Hilton in 6th with a 21.540 and Kutler Keetch of Cokeville with a 26.740. In the second rodeo of the day, Tie Down Roping highlights include Keetch again in the top 10 with a 4th place and a time of 18.440 and Case Kerr in 5th with a 27.110.
In the bull riding event, Clay Teichert of Cokeville finished his first ride with a score of 48. Teichert was the only bull rider on the weekend.
It’s a short fall season, with just two more rodeos remaining until breaking for the winter and resuming in the spring. The next rodeo will be held this Saturday, August 31 in Grace, Idaho. It will once again be a double header rodeo to finish out the fall schedule. Heading into the weekend, Brooklyn Brown is in the top 5 in total points in Breakaway Roping, sitting in 2nd with 11 points. Ross Hilton and his team roping partner are tied for 1st place with 19 points, while Ryder & Case Kerr are tied for 3rd place. Kutler Keetch and Cinch Pope are both tied for 3rd place in Tie Down Roping.
