The Star Valley golf teams competed at Rendezvous Golf Course in Pinedale last week with both taking the top spots in the team race. The Lady Braves were not challenged as they finished by more than 130 strokes in front of second-place Evanston. The rest of the teams did not have enough players to qualify for a team score.
Individually, Jordyn Horsley won the girls side by three strokes over Kemmerer’s Tazlyn Wagner who finished in front of Horsley the previous weekend in Green River.
“Jordyn had an especially stellar Day One, shooting one over par 73,” replied head coach Kelly Fullmer. “Kate Ricks and Kambree Johnson both carded their personal best score at a tournament in Pinedale helping the Lady Braves win going away.”
The boys individual side was decided between Pinedale’s Braxton Costello and Kemmerer’s Trevan Cristen with the home-course Costello placing first. As a team, the Braves had Sean Stout, Deegan Hill and Aiden DeCora finish 5-7 to push the team to the title.
“We expected to do well and we did,” Fullmer added. “Last week we posted our best one day team total for boys and girls in at least 17 years, and in Pinedale we achieved our new best one day team totals for both girls and boys in a couple of decades.”
In all, four of the five varsity scores for the boys team finished in the top ten. Bran Fullmer and Jack Nield, categorized as JV players for the team, played well enough to put them in the varsity scores in the tournament field.
“We remain eight-deep on the boys side with the possibility of playing at least three different varsity players each week,” Fullmer continued. “Our 5-7 ranked players are separated by less than half a stroke on their season stroke average”
This week the teams travel east to Rock Springs where they will see the rest of the 4A field.
“That will tell us more how we’re stacking up as we move into conference championships in two weeks,” Fullmer said.
