The Town of Afton is seeking public input on how often Star Valley residents would like to see the color of the star changed. The Star was recently remade with the help of multiple community volunteers and students at Star Valley High School. The new star has built in LED lighting that come with the ability to change from the normal white glow to a multitude of colors at the simple push of a button.

Based on community feedback received during the installation process, the Town of Afton developed a policy that they would only change the color of the star a few times per year, such as 4th of July and Christmas. But multiple community members have since expressed the desire to have the star change colors much more often.

Afton Town Administrator Violet Sanderson called into the Weekday Wake-Up on Wednesday, October 2 to explain the functions of the star and the color capabilities. Her comments can be heard below. Duke & Dahl then asked listeners of SVI’s morning radio show to text in their opinions. Should the star colors be changed more often in conjunction with more holidays and SVHS events? Or should it be kept to a couple of times per year.  Below are their responses.

Change the color often

“Light it up! I’m all for celebrating holidays, community events, high school sports, etc. by showcasing colors on the Star. but if I have to only choose a few “light” days, I’d go with military related holidays such as Veterans Day, Memorial Day and 4th of July and high school football games and Breast Cancer awareness month.”

“Definitely change it often! A lot of work went into it and it’s really fun to see what it can do.”

“Let’s make it more colorful! The “A” on Utah State turns blue after each victory. Let’s color it for holidays, games, and special events.”

“Heck ya the lights are there, use them!”

“Please light the star up for every occasion possible! With colors to match the occasions!!”

“Change the colors!! Start with pink night tonight!! Holiday colors, School colors. blinking, chasing lights….celebrate life!”

“As easy as it can change color it should change on all holidays and special events and high school events.”

“Absolutely light it up! Take every opportunity to celebrate! Definitely should be in conjunction with SVHS activities- they originally created the iconic Star and did the majority of the work with this update! Why not start it on PINK night?!? What’s a better time than highlighting the work the volleyball team does to bring awareness and raise funds for those battling cancer. The town is missing THE BALL if they don’t get behind that!”

“Most holidays and special community events. Like homecoming, graduation etc.”

“Valentine’s day, memorial day, flag day, 4th of July, fair week, labor day, homecoming, Christmas holidays.”

“Varsity wins, local holidays and calendar holidays.”

“All Holidays. After Braves games at home in crimson and gold. State championships. Night of light parade. Pink Night. All events that are part of the fabric of our community.”

“Pleeeeease light the star in SVHS colors for homecoming. It would be so fun to light the star with the activities with the high school. ”

Do not change the color often

“Changed on homecoming. High school graduation week. The Star is a high school tradition. Not the town of Afton tradition.”

“Only once or twice during the year, that’s a can of worms you don’t wanna open.”

“Major holidays and homecoming.”

“If you light the star for one thing you’re gonna have to light it for everyone and everything. As a taxpayer, I feel like the town has done a fantastic job of setting a precedent. Now included in that policy is supposed to be all wins and titles for all high school activities and Swift Creek high school.”

“Only change the color of the star on special events and maybe holidays. So at most 10-12 times a year.”

“How about July 10th, Wyoming statehood day.”

“How about July 2 for my birthday and preparing for the 4th of July. How silly can we be. We used carry whitewash on pack horses once a year.”
