Increase in DUI Stops in Lincoln County

• Sheriff Johnson Calls for Greater Awareness and Enforcement in Response to Rising DUI Rates

Lincoln County Sheriff Shane Johnson has reported a notable rise in DUI incidents over the past year. With over 100 DUIs recorded, law enforcement is intensifying efforts to combat impaired driving. Sheriff Johnson indicated that these offenses are occurring earlier in the day, with alarming alcohol levels often exceeding .25 to .30—three to four times the legal limit.

“We’re certainly not under the impression we are getting them all,” Johnson stated, emphasizing the department’s commitment to reducing these numbers through additional overtime shifts and targeted DUI patrols. A specialized team of deputies has been actively working to identify and apprehend impaired drivers.

With 33 years of experience in law enforcement, Johnson expressed concern about the societal perception of DUI offenses, noting that driving under the influence does not receive the attention it warrants. He called for an attitude shift regarding the seriousness of impaired driving, underscoring its dangers to everyone on the road.

In collaboration with the highway patrol, the county is also participating in campaigns aimed at educating the public about the risks of impaired driving. Johnson urged individuals to plan for safe transportation by designating a sober driver when going out. He also encouraged residents to report any suspicious driving behavior by contacting dispatch, ensuring a proactive approach to road safety.
