County Treasurer addresses tax questions

• Details distribution to districts.

* Editor’s Note: Lincoln County Treasurer Jerry Greenfield provided the following report on tax distribution to the public districts.

There are a lot of questions about property taxes since the 2024 statements have been sent out. So I have put together some information about taxes as follows

Wyoming is just like every other state, our property taxes and Motor Vehicle registrations are how all special districts are funded.

Our vehicle registration may be a bit higher than other states however we have — NO STATE INCOME TAX.

Listed below is where our tax money goes to fund the special districts. As County Treasurer we collect and distribute to the following special Districts.

67.22%   Education

2.62% Cities/Towns

1.55% Cemetery

5.33% Hospitals

0.56% Parks & Recreation

1.99% Fire

0.53% Irrigation

0.05% Predatory & animal

0.66% Fair

1.63% Library

0.24% Service Districts

0.16% Senior center

1.40% Weed & Pest Control

16.04% County General

The overall property tax for 2024 is $2,141,162.00 lower than 2023. The problem is personal  property taxes have gone up,  as industry taxes are down due to a reduction in minerals production.

In the past industry was a major tax payer, over fifty percent of all property tax was paid by them. That has all changed due to the war on coal, gas and oil by our current administration.

Counties are governed by the State Statutes which are addressed by the Legislature annually. The Wyoming legislators over the last few years have been trying to figure out how to fund education and all other forms of local government services and lower taxes — A balancing act.

With the growth we are currently experiencing it should bring a little property tax relief in the future.

Each of these Special Districts have a board to monitor the use of these funds. I am required to distribute them. These are your taxes dollars and you have the right to question how they spend those funds.

As County Treasurer I just collect and distribute as required by law. Your interaction with the various boards is important and could have an effect on your property taxes.

I trust this information will bring some clarification as to where, who and how your tax dollars are spent.
