Governor Gordon Praises TerraPower’s Non-Russian Uranium Initiative
• TerraPower’s strategic move aims to strengthen U.S. energy security and promote advanced nuclear technology
Governor Mark Gordon has commended TerraPower for its recent announcement regarding efforts to secure a stable source of non-Russian high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU). He described this initiative as a positive development for both Wyoming and the nation.
TerraPower, which broke ground on its first commercial-scale nuclear plant, Natrium, in Kemmerer last summer, aims to utilize HALEU as part of its investment in the new reactor and energy storage system. This facility is strategically located near an existing coal plant.
In a statement, Governor Gordon noted, “Recognizing that domestic production of uranium is not yet at capacity, TerraPower’s procurement of non-Russian uranium is a welcome and smart move that will benefit the plant in Kemmerer, our state, and our country.” He emphasized the importance of securing a consistent source of HALEU for the next generation of small modular nuclear facilities, which he believes is crucial for domestic energy security.
The Governor also highlighted the need for a diverse energy portfolio to meet increasing demands across Wyoming, the West, and the nation, stating, “It’s important we avail ourselves of a balanced all-of-the-above, multi-source energy portfolio.”
Governor Gordon’s support underscores the potential of TerraPower’s initiatives to contribute to both local economic growth and national energy independence.
