Local residents jumped into action Tuesday night to help emergency responders following a vehicle vs horse accident in Alpine.
The Alpine Fire Department said that at 6:25 p.m. on December 3 a pickup collided with a horse at milepost 116 on Highway 89, which is near the Elk Feed Grounds south of Alpine. The driver of the truck was uninjured in the accident, although major damage occurred to the front of the vehicle.
“The horse was saddled but without a rider,” said Alpine Fire Chief Mike Vogt. “The horse was severely injured but was still standing. The rider was not found but was identified by people on scene.”
According to Vogt, it appears the horse had been tied up when it may have fell on ice and broken it’s bridle, becoming free and began running down the highway.
“A driver began escorting (the horse) and used their lights to make it visible,” continued Vogt. “Several other folks assisted after the accident to calm the horse and unsaddle it. A couple arrived with a truck and trailer to get the horse to care. Luckily the horse was able to walk into the trailer. Lisa with Bridger Animal Hospital was able to meet them and provide care to the horse.”
“Just another example of care and kindness that exists in the Star Valley area. We thank you all and hope for the best outcome.”
