Secretary of State Certifies Initiative to Provide Property Tax Limits in Wyoming for 2026 General Election Ballot; First Initiative in Wyoming in 30 Years
CHEYENNE, WY – On January 2, 2025, Wyoming Secretary of State Chuck Gray certified the “People’s Initiative to Limit Property Tax in Wyoming through a Homeowner’s Property Exemption” following the committee of applicants’ submission of the required number of valid signatures as required by the Wyoming Constitution and Wyoming State Statute. Pursuant to Wyoming law, the people may propose and enact laws by initiative upon completion of the requirements set forth in W.S. 22-24-301 et seq. At the 2026 General Election, this would be the first initiative in Wyoming in 30 years. Following a review of the initiative’s Committee of Applicants’ first and second submittal of signatures submitted prior to the 2024 General Election, the Secretary of State’s Office verified 30,251 total valid signatures, which exceeds the number of signatures required by law.
“Based on our office’s review of the first and second submittals, it is with sincere congratulations that I announce that the initiative has achieved the required number of signatures,” Secretary Gray said in a statement. “In accordance with the powers vested in this office by the Wyoming State Constitution and Wyoming State law, I’m also announcing that the initiative has accordingly received the necessary signatures to be submitted to the people of Wyoming for the 2026 General Election. This is an historic moment for our state. The 2026 General Election will mark the 30-year anniversary of the last time an initiative was on the ballot,” Secretary Gray also said. “The people’s right to propose and enact laws by initiative to address fundamental issues, such as property tax limits, is pivotal to our state. I look forward to putting forward to the People of Wyoming the choice of property tax limits in the upcoming election.”
