Braves upset #2 Tigers; Rock Springs girls roll in Afton

Rock Springs came to Afton on Saturday, April 20 to face off against SVHS on the soccer pitch and picked up a one-sided victory in the girls varsity match and were handed a loss by the Braves in the varsity boys contest.

• Varsity Girls: Rock Springs 5 Star Valley 0
The Tigers came into the match having scored over 60 goals on the season and allowed just one and those numbers held true on Saturday morning as they blitzed the Star Valley defense with 31 shots on goal and found the back of the net five times. Alyssa Bedard bookended the scoring with the game’s first and last goals in the 8th and 70th minute. Sandwiched in between were goals from Karli Nelson (13th), Lilianna Hernandez (18th) and Emily Taucher (45th).

Defensively the Lady Braves fought uphill all day against the onslaught with Jose Currie turning away 14 shots from her keeper position. Star Valley did not have a shot on goal offensively or a corner kick. The Tigers finished with six corners.

• Varsity Boys: Rock Springs 0 Star Valley 1
The boys match pitted the #2 team in the 4A ranks against the homesteading Braves but at the end of the day, the momentum from Star Valley’s win over Green River carried over into a victory on Saturday. The game’s numbers were very event with each team compiling 11 shots on goal. Jesus Ruiz had four saves for the Tigers and Alek Lawson had five for the Braves.

The game-winner happened relatively early in the contest as Robert Choma crossed the ball which was deftly scored by Gerson Lozano in the 14th minute. It is Lozano’s 11th goal in the past six matches.

There were several close calls for the Tigers, but perhaps none closer than Luswin Trujillo’s shot which got past Lawson but was tracked down and ushered outside the left upright by Spencer Larson who collided with the post as a result.

It was a physical game that saw a yellow card for each team and a late collision between Lawson and Miguel Loredo which saw the latter helped off the field and Lawson limping between the pipes for the game’s final minutes.

Look for more details from this match in the April 24, 2019 edition of the Star Valley Independent.

Star Valley’s soccer teams will be at Green River on Tuesday April 23 and then host Natrona County on Friday April 26 and Kelly Walsh on Saturday April 27. The matches against the Casper schools will be broadcast here on SVInews.com
