Osmond Elementary School and Afton Elementary School conducted their annual winter food drive battle with their CEREALously SOUPer Bowl in February. Once again, Osmond emerged as the winner and will house the SOUPer Bowl trophy another year.

Each year, the two schools spend several days in a competitive drive to provide needed food to the Afton Food Pantry. As the Pantry has been in need of soup and cereal this year, the drive focused on gathering soup and cereal to stock the shelves of the Food Pantry.

“Osmond did win the competition, but it was very close and hard fought,” said Tyler Jack, OES Principal. “The two schools donated record numbers of food this year.”

OES collected and donated 495 bags or boxes of cereal, 552 cans of soup, and 390 other items. Food items that have passed the expiration date are unable to be used by the Pantry, so 261 items from OES were unusable. AES gathered and donated 444 bags or boxes of cereal, 575 cans of soup, and 495 other items. The Pantry was unable to use 203 of those items due to expiration.

“Total items between both schools included 939 bags or boxes of cereal, 1,127 cans of soup, and 885 other items,” Jack said. The Star Valley High School Senior Capstone Class loaded all the food from both schools on buses, then transported and delivered it to the Pantry.

Sierra Mitchell, director of the Food Pantry, told Jack “Doing our math, at serving an average of 25 families per week, your schools have given us cereal for the next 37 months. That number is incredible!!!! The Pantry will not have to buy Cereal for over 3 years! That’s a huge win! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for a very successful and fun CEREALously SOUPer Bowl Food Drive. Thank you for making this drive extra fun and extra competitive and for helping the Pantry make a huge difference for so many families in need of food assistance.”
