Cheney defends U.S. intent to withdraw from the Open Skies Treaty

Washington – Wyoming Congresswoman House Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney (R-WY), who also serves on the House Armed Services Committee, released the following statement (see full text) after the Trump Administration announced its intent to withdraw from the Treaty on Open Skies:

“I applaud President Trump for announcing his intent to withdraw from the Open Skies Treaty. This treaty benefits Russia far more than the United States. Not only does Vladimir Putin abuse the agreement to collect intelligence and undermine the safety and security of the American people, but he has not been in compliance with it for years. Leaving this treaty will free up millions of dollars to bolster our defense capabilities in the Indo-Pacific and modernize our nuclear deterrent.”
