• Officials are concerned with declining participation

Star Valley’s Cutter/Chariot Racing season is underway, with races happening every other Saturday on the track at 1489 Allred Road in Afton. Saturday, January 4 is the next event. All race events begin at 1 p.m., offering children’s races and concessions.

Officials with the All American Club are concerned, however, with a decline in participation at the Afton races.  “It’s kind of a dying off deal,” said Club President Taylor Hollis in an interview with SVI Media last week. “Four legends have passed away in the last year. On a good day, in Afton, we only have five teams.  Local teams are staying local, but teams from other communities are going to Ogden for races.”

Hollis hopes to inspire new blood, or younger generations in the legendary families, to get involved. “You don’t need to have the fastest horses on the track. If you have horses that can run together and you know how to train them, bring them on out there. We need every little bit of support we can get.”

Cutter racing history in Star Valley goes back to the 1940’s when teams began racing in Thayne. For generations, families have kept the sport alive with winter racing, concessions, children’s races where kids win candy, apparel sales, and the fundraising race that benefits the Shriner Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City each season.

This season needs a shot in the arm. Teams are encouraged to come and try it out. Vendors are invited to participate. Fans are welcome to spread the word and join the fun. Races this season are scheduled in Afton on January 11 and 25, with the Shriners races scheduled for February 8-9. “That should be a good turnout. That’s something we are excited to hold.”

“New teams who have the will and the desire to follow their grandpa’s tradition, is what will keep it going – the younger generation,” said Hollis. “Come on out and have fun.”

The draw happens at 5 p.m. on the Wednesday evening before race Saturdays. Anyone interested in participating, vending or learning more can contact Hollis at 307-413-0677 or the club’s secretary, Tiffany Bateman, at 307-413-7519.

“It doesn’t take very long and it’s a good time.”

Entrance to watch the races in $5. Children enter free of charge. All race dates and information are posted on All American Cutter/Chariot Races – Afton, WY Facebook page.
