“Grow A Little Extra” with the Wyoming Hunger Initiative offering free seeds

The following is a statement from Wyoming’s First Lady, Jenny Gordon, and the Wyoming Hunger Initiative

Some people get excited about the April showers that bring May flowers, but I’m looking forward to the April snowfalls that bring May gardens! Wyoming Hunger Initiative has launched its fourth season of Grow A Little Extra by distributing six varieties of vegetable seeds proven to thrive in Wyoming’s growing season to University of Wyoming Extension offices across the state. The premise of the program is simple: fresh produce can be expensive and difficult to procure for food pantries. So, we’re asking gardeners of all ages to donate their extra produce throughout the summer. Last year gardeners accepted the challenge to the tune of 27,000 lbs of donated produce! That means fresh, local food for anti-hunger organizations throughout Wyoming to distribute to our neighbors in need.

You can pick up (free!) seeds at your county’s Extension office, or simply donate some of what you’re already planning on growing—no matter what, it’s pretty magical to see soil turn into solutions in the fight against food insecurity.

Together, we can end hunger in Wyoming.

With love and gratitude,

Jennie Gordon

First Lady of Wyoming

You don’t need special training in fighting food insecurity to make a difference. You only need to identify a need and figure out how best to help fill it.  Wyoming Hunger Initiative, the University of Wyoming Cent$ible Nutrition Program, and Master Gardener program invite you to join the fight against food insecurity in Wyoming this season! When you commit to Grow A Little Extra for local anti-hunger organizations, everyone benefits.

Pick up (free!) seeds selected for Wyoming gardens at your local UW Extension office or donate your own favorite crop — either way, you’ll be an anti-hunger warrior with two green thumbs as you help your neighbors in need. Increased access to fresh produce in Wyoming is a critical tool in the fight against food insecurity. Grow A Little Extra is helping to remove existing barriers one vegetable at a time.
