Track season will be one of adaptation

Just a quick look outside will tell you all you need to know about what the next six weeks of track and field season will bring. Several feet of ice and snow are still hampering practice efforts at a time of year when most coaches are hoping to catalogue some solid marks for their athletes.

A prime example is this week’s schedule for SVHS Track and Field as they are scheduled to compete at Sugar-Salem High School on Wednesday. Unless that date is scheduled to Thursday. Or perhaps even Friday.

According to Coach Ty Draney the school is in contact with those planning to compete and hoping to dry out their own facilities a bit more before they arrive.

“We’ll keep everyone posted on that,” Draney said. “It would be nice to get some marks. In 20 years I’ve been doing this it hasn’t been quite this bad. 2010 was bad but we had some marks that year by now. Coming off a great indoor season it feels like we’re a little lost and treading water.”

It will require some patience and some good fortune and hopefully a lack of flooding to make that last statement figurative rather than literal.

“Everybody is just trying to get some reps where we can,” Draney continued. “This season will be interesting and the scary part is that we’re going to need boats if it warms up suddenly.”

After this week the program is scheduled to be in Evanston at the Red Devils facility.

“We’re supposed to be at Evanston next Wednesday but they are still under snow,” Draney added. “After that we have a few other things we’ll try and do but all bets are off. We may be calling this season Omaha because we’ll be calling an audible every week.”
