Winter conditions cancel and snarl weekend sports and activities

Winter conditions have claimed many events that were scheduled to take place on Friday across the region including those involving Star Valley teams. 

As of 9 a.m. on Friday, Star Valley High School Activities Director, Rob Erickson, has confirmed the following:

• Boys wrestling scheduled for the Madison Invitational in Rexburg, Idaho has been canceled. Event organizers are attempting to make this a one-day tournament on Saturday, January 13. 

• Girls wrestling scheduled for the Herriman Invite in Utah has been canceled. The Lady Braves are attempted to be part of the one-day tournament in Rexburg at the Madison Invite. 

• Boys basketball versus Marsh Valley at SVHS has been canceled. This includes freshman, junior varsity and varsity contests scheduled for Friday in Afton. 

• Speech and Debate event to Evanston has been canceled. 

The latest information has the Lady Braves basketball team still scheduled to play in Preston, Idaho on Saturday night with a 7:30 p.m. tip-time. 

Star Valley Indoor Track and Field will be taking athletes to Pocatello, Idaho for an event at ISU.

Star Valley is under a winter storm warning until 8 p.m. Friday evening with anywhere from 3-5 inches of snow combining with gusting wind. Winds are projected for 20-25 mph with gusts as high as 40 mph. Chance of precipitation in the area is at 90%. 

Friday night temperatures are expected to drop below zero at -1 with wind chill values as low as -15 amid blustery conditions. 

An additional 3-5 inches of snow are forecast for Saturday with more showers likely on Sunday.
