LCSD No. 2 Board Meeting Highlights

The Lincoln County School District No. 2 Board of Trustees held their monthly meeting on February 12, 2025. Here are a few items of note from the meeting.

Principal Steve Burch reported on several items for Star Valley Middle School including SVMS Robotics recently held a competition and had 24 students participating.

Assistant Superintendent, Jason Horsley, gave a report on graduation rates for high schools in LCSD No. 2. Cokeville had a 100-percent graduation rate, Star Valley had a rate of 90.1-percent and Swift Creek High had rates ranging from 39-percent in a four-year plan but a rate that increased to 69-percent when students had a five year path.

Sue Helm reported on several items related to food service for students at Star Valley High School and trying to overcome challenges of nutrition and fluctuating numbers. Helm, along with administrators and parents observed multiple aspects of the SVHS lunch program in regards to try and improve efficiency and shortages. Mrs. Helm also spoke about how the department is working to strike a balance between disposable and reusable trays to help eliminate waste.

Superintendent Matt Erickson reported that there are 2,926 students in LCSD No. 2 currently, which is up seven from January and down two from last year at this same time.

Warren Hicks gave a facilities update to the board including the progress of a major bus garage update which was approved for funding from the state after a Most Cost Effective Remedy (MCER) study. The projects for the updates will cost $578,550 which was approved by the state.

Mr. Hicks also gave an update on the upcoming addition of a second wrestling room at SVHS. Work is expected to begin as quickly after the season as possible with a hopeful completion date of October 31, 2025. Hicks noted that there is some light anxiety about the potential availability of steel for the project with the state of steel production world-wide that could delay the project. Mr. Hicks shared computer images of the additional room which will be above the current wrestling room and have an adjoining door to the track above the basketball court.

Additional major projects also in the pipeline include the Star Valley Middle School roof and the Cokeville High School weight room.

A lengthy discussion about the future approval of the school calendar was had. The discussion was tabled for further discussion and a work session in the coming weeks.
