Domestic violence remains a critical issue affecting individuals and families across the nation, including Lincoln County. Local resources are available to support victims and provide avenues for healing and recovery.

The Turning Point, Lincoln County’s Self-Help Center, is dedicated to reducing the incidence of family violence, sexual assault, incest, and child abuse. The agency offers a range of essential services, including:

Advocacy: You do not have to go through this alone. Trained advocates are available to provide support and guidance.

Protection Order: Assistance is available to help you fill out and file an order of protection.

Emergency Shelters: Temporary housing can be provided to those in need.

Transportation: Help is available to get you to appointments, court, and to aid in getting back on your feet.

Referrals: The agency works with several different organizations to ensure you receive the assistance you need.

Sheriff Shane Johnson emphasizes the importance of community awareness and support for victims of domestic violence. He stated, “Turning Point is always available for domestic violence situations to help out with possible protection orders and shelters. They have the professional resources to help out with domestic violence.” He also acknowledged the prevalence of this issue, noting, “It’s a problem here in our county and throughout the country. It is something that is preventable, and we want to continue to work on educating and letting people know about the resources available. Let people know that violence is never an option no matter how mad you are; no matter what’s going on, there are better ways to handle it.”

Additionally, the sheriff’s office has made strides to ensure that victims feel comfortable seeking assistance. Johnson pointed out that “the sheriff’s office now has three female deputies, and Afton has a female officer. Sometimes it is more comfortable for a female victim of domestic violence to talk to a female.”

Turning Point’s mission focuses on providing comprehensive services and preventive education programs in schools and communities. Support is delivered in a non-judgmental manner, empowering individuals to make informed choices about their situations.

Domestic violence is a serious issue that requires community intervention. With resources like the 24-hour crisis lines and support from local law enforcement and advocacy groups, victims in Lincoln County have access to the help they need. Remember, you are not alone, and there are people ready to support you in your journey toward safety and recovery.
