• Alice in Wonderland Jr. performances scheduled for June 18, 19 and 20
The Star Valley Arts Council’s 4th Annual Children’s Summer Theater Camp is offering “Alice in Wonderland, Jr.” this June. Auditions are scheduled for May 5 and 7. Camp rehearsals will take place in May and June with performances at the Ford Theatre Wednesday through Friday, June 18-20.
This camp is open to children ages 6-16. Tuition is $75 per child, unless your family has more than one child participating. If additional children from your family will be participating, each additional participant’s tuition is $50. Tickets for the performances are $8 per person.
“If your children have expressed interest in participating in the camp, this year is a great year to give it a try,” exclaimed Tina Crowther, Theater Camp Director, in an interview with SVI Media by text last week. “This camp opportunity is a fantastic value thanks to a generous grant provided by the Wyoming Community Foundation. Alice in Wonderland, Jr. is a super fun musical performance with songs from both the Disney movie and the 2010 live-action film.”
Auditions for the camp are scheduled for Monday, May 5 from 4-5:30 p.m. and Wednesday, May 7 from 5-6:40 p.m. at the Ford Theatre in Afton. Candidates are invited to arrive at the theater any time during the audition time window, register on the signup sheet, submit a participant contract and pay your tuition. Directors will observe children in the order of their registration. Children should be prepared to sing a 1-minute song and present a short, memorized nursery rhyme. There will be a piano available, but if you desire accompaniment, you must provide your own accompanist.
If you want to participate only in the chorus, you will not need to sing at auditions, but “please come by and submit a participant contract and let us know your plans!” Everyone who wants to be involved will be included in the cast and be able to participate. Parents can expect an email with the cast list on Thursday or they can visit starvalleyarts.org. Please contact directors immediately if your child will not be accepting their position.
Children awarded lead parts will be expected to attend five early-evening rehearsals in May. These rehearsal dates and locations will be announced at auditions. Camp officially begins with full-cast rehearsals on Monday, June 2 with sessions continuing for two weeks before performances. Rehearsals will run Monday through Saturday from 10 to noon at the Ford Theatre. Each rehearsal includes time learning music and lines as well as “skills associated with live theatre” and a snack.
“Auditions are one of my favorite things about this camp,” said Crowther. “It’s so fun to see the kids get on stage and be so brave! I love the courage and confidence the kids exude as they approach auditions! But if anyone is feeling kind of shy or nervous, they are welcome to skip the stage and just come say ‘Hi’ to the directors! We’re really friendly! We’re not scary, and we’d love to meet you and get you in the show!”
