Star Valley High School’s Jazz Band, Chamber Orchestra and Concert Orchestra performed last Saturday, April 26, for the Music in the Parks Festival in Layton, Utah. All three ensembles received the highest scores of all ensembles in their respective classifications and received high praises from judges.

“It was a fantastic week for our music students at SVHS this past week,” said Kurt Sand, SVHS Band Director.

The SVHS Chamber Orchestra and Jazz Band were selected as the best overall orchestra and jazz band at the festival. Senior and trumpeter Brock Haderlie was also recognized as the outstanding jazz soloist for the festival.

“Orchestras from as far as Las Vegas and Burley, Idaho competed and both the Concert Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra again received Superior ratings,” said Lisa Barber, SVHS Orchestra Director. Though the Concert Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra were placed in different classes, both groups took 1st place in their class.

“I am so proud of the poise and maturity both groups displayed in their performances and their high level of musicianship,” said Barber.  “The BYU professors who adjudicated at Music in the Parks had some suggestions for future improvement as well as a tremendous amount of positive feedback. Without great support from administrators and community it is not possible to have this kind of success. Congratulations to everyone that has had a part in allowing these students to excel!”
