In the serene and beautiful backdrop of Star Valley, Haile Merritt’s story is one of incredible resilience and the transformative power of community. After moving away for her college education and the early years of her marriage, Haile returned home to support her mother following her father’s passing. Since marrying Michael Merritt in 2010, she has embraced the joys and challenges of motherhood with their four children, including Kyler, whom they adopted from Ukraine. Kyler’s diagnosis of Down syndrome and autism has enriched their family life, bringing both unique challenges and profound joy.

In 2021, Haile noticed a lump on her head. Initially, she dismissed it, hoping it would resolve on its own. However, as the lump grew, Haile decided to seek medical advice. After surgery revealed a benign tumor, she felt a wave of relief. Yet, complications arose, leading to an infection that prolonged her recovery. By April 2024, she faced a new challenge: a second lump appeared, this time accompanied by two tumors. The emotional toll was heavy. “I felt as though I lacked the capacity to be sick with all of my obligations,” Haile expressed, highlighting the weight of her responsibilities as a mother of four with a full-time job.

These tumors are rare, primarily affecting women in their 30s and 40s, and Haile grappled with both physical and psychological battles. Stigma and fear surrounded her condition, making her hesitant to share her struggles. It wasn’t until a conversation with her hairdresser, Cassie, that she found encouragement to pursue a long-held dream of participating in a Run Disney event.

With Cassie’s support, Haile registered for the race and enlisted the help of her friend Michelle and trainer Kenzie Taylor. Training became not just a physical challenge but a mental one, as Haile confronted her fears of recurrence. “The primary challenge I faced during my training was largely psychological,” she recalled. The most significant experience during her training occurred when her treadmill malfunctioned just weeks before the race. “One Sunday afternoon, my sister arrived at my home, bringing her own treadmill as a means to support my continued preparation, despite the persistent winter conditions. She hugged me and expressed her regret at not being able to attend the race; however, she emphasized her commitment to ensuring that I had the necessary resources for my training.” The unwavering support from her sister, husband, and children transformed her training into a family affair, with her kids cheering her on every step of the way. Additionally, Haile appreciated the encouragement from her neighbors, who cheered for her as they passed by, and her dear friend Michelle, who ran alongside her during the race.

Haile’s journey culminated at the 2025 Spring Time Disney Run, where she joined over 30,000 participants. The event proved grueling, with humidity and heat pushing many runners to their limits. Yet, Haile persevered. As she crossed the finish line, her husband awaited her, tears in his eyes. In that moment, she realized how significant this journey had been for him as well. The emotional weight of the race and all they had endured together resonated deeply, and his tears reflected the depth of their shared struggles throughout her health challenges.

“Being tumor-free! The thought of being free from tumors for a year makes me smile,” Haile declared, capturing the relief and joy that accompanied her hard-won victory.

Reflecting on her experiences, Haile emphasized the importance of self-acceptance and grace. “If I requested that you list all the things you love, how long would it take for you to include yourself?” she pondered, urging others to recognize their worth amidst life’s challenges. Now, as she celebrates being tumor-free for a year, Haile acknowledges the lingering fear of recurrence but remains steadfast in her faith. “I believe God has a purpose for me that I must trust,” she affirmed.

Haile Merritt’s journey is more than a story of overcoming illness; it’s a testament to the strength found in vulnerability and the unwavering support of community. Her story inspires others to embrace their struggles, celebrate their triumphs, and cherish the love that surrounds them. In a world often clouded by uncertainty, Haile shines as a beacon of hope and resilience.
