At the normally scheduled board meeting for LCSD No. 2, the trustees approved the hiring of Kyle McClain as the new Activities Director for Star Valley High School. McClain comes to Wyoming by way of Oregon. McClain will replace Rob Erickson in that capacity with Erickson’s name being read as retiring from the district after 30 years of service. McClain spoke with SVI about making the move to Star Valley.
“I’ve lived in Oregon all my life,” he said. “I’ve been an avid outdoorsman with fly fishing and hunting so I’m drawn to that type of country. I reached out to the WHSAA asking if there were any positions open and they pointed me to Star Valley and after I did a little research I felt it would be a good fit with how much success they’ve had in the past.”
McClain is currently the Assistance Athletic Director at Pleasant Hill High School, located approximately ten minutes east of Eugene, Oregon. Pleasant Hill is a 3A school in Oregon’s six-classification system with an enrollment of approximately 350 students.
McClain stated that there were several attractive features of the job which caused him to apply.
“This position is solely responsible for athletics and activities,” he said. “No discipline or attendance or things like that. Plus from the research that I’ve done there are a lot of financial support. I don’t have to worry about a transportation budget with Wyoming matching that, there is an activities secretary and a trainer. I’m confident I can continue to elevate activities at Star Valley to reach higher potential especially with the resources that Star Valley has.”
Before his current position, McClain was at North Douglas High School during the COVID-19 pandemic where he taught Physical Education and was also the head wrestling coach, athletic director and Dean of Students. He was also the head wrestling coach at Springfield High School which has an enrollment of approximately 1,200 students for five years and has also been a middle school PE teacher.
McClain says he has already benefitted from the area’s friendly residents.
“The hospitality has been second to none,” he added. “As soon as I signed my contract I got a lot of text messages with listings and rentals and I was able to secure an apartment and they’ve been really accommodating. I’m hoping to move in the first of July.”
In addition to the hiring of McClain, a pair of coaching changes were approved by the board.
• Volleyball – Kalin Schwab was approved as the new head coach for Lady Braves volleyball as well as part of the personnel portion of the meeting. Schwab will replace Suni Brown who was the head coach for the past two seasons. The volleyball program advanced to the state tournament this school year for the tenth consecutive time, including the past seven at the 4A level.
• Girls Wrestling – Jeff Anderson was approved as the new head coach of the Lady Braves wrestling team as part of the meeting. Anderson will replace Kevin Waldron who was the head coach for a portion of the 2023-24 season and also the 2024-25 campaign. The SVHS girls wrestling team has won all three Wyoming team titles since the state sanctioned the sport.
