• 28 athletes heading to Casper this weekend

The final weekend of the 2024-25 school sports calendar is coming up as a total of 28 athletes from the Star Valley High School Track and Field program will be competing at the 4A State Championships at Kelly Walsh High School.

This past week, the Lady Braves and Braves both placed third in the eight-team fields at the 4A West Regionals held in Evanston. The Natrona Fillies and Mustangs captured the team titles. The girls finished with 215.5 points with their cross-town rivals from Kelly Walsh placing second with 170.0. Star Valley’s total of 62.0 was six points in front of the Jackson Lady Broncs for third.

Individually, Gracey Visser claimed regional championships in both the 1600 and 3200 meter events. Abigail Carrillo-Zarate placed second in the shot put but broke her own school record in doing so with a distance of 38’ 10”.

On the boys side the Mustangs won the team title with a total of 151.5 points. Evanston was second with 136.5 while Star Valley was next with 115.5.

Hayden Morgan won dual regional titles in the the hurdling events as he took the 110 and 300 meter events. Jase Burton won the 800 meter race and also combined with Colton Cranney, Brigham Hahn and Habi Wetzel to win the 4×800 relay title. The relay team’s time of 7:54.52 is a new school record, breaking the mark of 7:58.15 set by Peter Visser, Dustin Brown, Wesley Kallgren and Wyatt Peck in 2018.

Other top finishes for Star Valley included a second place for Preston Ross in the 400 meter, second place finishes in the 4×100 and 4×400 relays and second place for Eli Matautia in the shot put.

Last year at the state championships, the Lady Braves placed 5th while the Braves placed eighth.
