Independent Notes: Town clerks, administrators  are key to the success of a community.

I have covered so many town council meetings over the past four decades, I have lost track. When combined with other public meetings, a few thousand at a minimum.

Most have been here in Star Valley, first with Afton and Thayne, but then as Star Valley Ranch and Alpine added incorporated municipalities, I added those towns to the list.

Early on in the journalism career there were also town councils in Idaho and Utah.

I can’t remember all of them but I can remember many of the topics that would take governing bodies late into the night with their decisions.

As a reporter, I would ride out the full length of those meetings because quite often the story didn’t come together until 10 or 11 at night.  (Sometimes, past midnight!) It was all part of the job.

One thing I can say for sure, a town council is further ahead if they have a good clerk and administrator. That can make all the difference.

Violet Sanderson is one of those people. As the Afton Town Administrator, she  is part of the key to success for Afton.

The Wyoming Association of Municipalities recognized that fact when they honored Violet with a Community Hero Award at the annual convention recently in Cheyenne.

As a keen observer of government operations, something that comes with both attending and serving in public office, I see where key people can make a difference in the success of a governing body.

I call them the “pivot members” — they help, both in a the public meeting, but also in all things surrounding the governing body.

Violet Sanderson is one of our successful pivot members.  She is a key member of not only the Afton community, but the valley community as well.

She is well deserving of the Wyoming Association of Municipalities honor.

Congratulations, Violet Sanderson!
