Thayne will be a part of the Wyoming’s Semiquincentennial celebration in the coming year with plans for a large community mural.
The artwork will be based on the theme, “Thayne’s Roots: A Tribute to Wyoming’s Heritage.”
Working with the Star Valley Arts Council, the Town of Thayne is commissioning the locally-led mural to be created on the town’s community center and it will incorporate pioneers, Wyoming women, and economic endeavors, all drawing attention to Wyoming’s national significance.
The artist(s) will be asked to “celebrate Thayne and Wyoming and the U.S., as part of the artwork, explained Thayne Mayor Devin Simpson.
In addition to the mural, a smaller project will designed to accommodate people seeking individual photos special designed backdrop acknowledging the community and the celebration.
The projects will be completed in two different phases and are part of the statewide program celebrating the Semiquincentennial.
Grants have been made available for qualifying communities.
In June, the Wyoming Semiquincentennial Planning Task Force announced the second round of awardees for the Semiquincentennial Grant Program. The first round of grants totaling $90,610 was announced earlier this month.
The grant program was launched last year and supported with a $2 million appropriation from the Wyoming Legislature.
The task force noted the grants provide communities, “the opportunity to honor and celebrate Wyoming’s role in shaping American history, and encourages a deeper understanding of Wyoming’s enduring legacy and its future contributions to the nation.”
Projects similar to Thayne will take place in conjunction with the celebration of the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026.
“I’m proud of the projects that communities and others are undertaking to celebrate Wyoming and the 250th celebration of our nation’s independence,” Gov. Mark Gordon said. “These projects showcase our history as Americans and Wyomingites, and will enrich our state for years to come.”
Thayne was among three entities awarded grants totaling $75,000 to assist with local projects.
Mayor Simpson advised the project will start in August and should be ready by September.
