A two-vehicle crash took place just south of Afton near the Kodiak Mountain Resort on Tuesday afternoon which shut down US 89 for a short time.

At approximately 1:15 p.m, first responders were called out to the scene on July 8. According to information provided by the Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP), an Audi SUV was traveling south when it pulled off onto the right hand shoulder and attempted a u-turn. A Toyota Camry sedan was also traveling southbound behind them and as they Audi turned into the roadway, the Toyota broadsided the SUV. The WHP noted that the driver of the Camry was able to slow down somewhat prior to the collision.

Members of the Afton Volunteer Fire Department, Star Valley EMS, the Afton Police Department and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash.

Both drivers and other occupants were wearing seatbelts and all airbags deployed. No injuries were reported. The drier of the Audi was cited for Failure to Turn With Safety.

Trooper Seth Schulthess noted that the curvature of the road also contributed to the accident.

“The passenger of the Audi felt like they had seen a bear so they pulled off but the location of the road made for a bit of a blind spot. Those types of spots are out there so we encourage people to be aware when they are making a turn that it’s much better to pull off and down and then get in a position to see both directions.”
