“Dream Home” south of Thayne a complete loss from fire

A new home located in the Salt River Ranch Estates south of Thayne is a complete loss after going up in flames Sunday night.

Chief Tedd Jenkins with Thayne Volunteer Fire Department said firefighters were dispatched to the scene just after 11:00 p.m. on September 21. When firefighters arrived no flames were visible, however the fire quickly spread through the attic.

“By the time we had a tanker truck set there were already flames coming through the roof,” stated Fireman Toby Merritt who was one of the first on scene. “There was enough wind that once it caught hold of the fire it took off.”

Both Alpine and Afton Fire Departments were called to assist. Firefighters worked through the night to bring the fire under control. They were on scene again Monday afternoon working on hotspots.

According to Chief Jenkins, the State Fire Marshals Office had been on site Monday morning inspecting the home, but had not yet released an official cause of the fire as of early afternoon. It appears the fire started near the wood fireplace in the attic and had been burning for sometime before the homeowners became aware of what was happening and called 911, according to Jenkins. All occupants of the home were able to evacuate safely and no injuries were reported.

Merritt said the home was a new build completed this summer. The homeowners described it as their dream home that they had just moved into a few months ago.

The Thayne Fire Department expressed their appreciation to the Alpine and Afton Fire Departments for their assistance.
