In response to the steady growth in attendance at community parades, the Afton Town Council has decided to adjust the parade route to enhance safety for participants, spectators, and emergency services. The current route, while steeped in tradition, has become inadequate for the increasing number of spectators, vehicles, floats, and pedestrians.
Concerns have been raised about congestion, limited access for emergency responders, and the safety of families and children in narrow or high-traffic areas. After thorough discussions and consultations with public safety officials, the Council believes that the new route will provide a safer and more enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
“The new route was followed for the fair parade and will be followed for the upcoming Homecoming Parade,” shared Violet Sanderson, Afton Town Administrator.
The revised parade route will begin at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds, located at the intersection of Washington St (US-89) and West 2nd Avenue. The parade will proceed south along Washington St (US-89), passing 3rd and 4th Avenues, before turning right onto 5th Avenue. Participants will then continue along 5th Avenue to Lincoln Street, where they will turn right again, heading north back to the Lincoln County Fairgrounds. The parade will conclude near the fairgrounds.
The decision to change the route is rooted in safety concerns, including:
Spectator Proximity: The risk of injury from children and adults stepping too close to moving parade vehicles or participants.
Unauthorized Access: Drivers attempting to bypass barricades and enter the closed parade route, posing dangers to both participants and spectators.
Residents will still have access to their properties up until shortly before the parade reaches their street. However, access will be temporarily restricted for safety reasons once the parade is about to enter a given area. Furthermore, all through traffic will be prohibited along the parade route for the duration of the event.
The Afton Town Council is committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable parade experience for everyone, while still preserving the spirit and traditions that make these events special for the community.
