The Star Valley Branch Library in Afton is hosting a Halloween event offering a live Clue-inspired experience with activities for patrons on Friday, October 31 from noon to 6 p.m. Guests of all ages from toddlers through adults are invited and encouraged to wear costumes, and the staff will supply candy to trick or treaters all day long.
Lizzy Larson, who serves as a librarian and plans many of the library’s events, loves Halloween and told SVI Media that she is “always down to have a party and a good time.” The staff enjoys dressing in a group costume for Halloween and was “kicking around ideas. We thought, ‘Oh, my goodness! What if we did Clue? We could dress up as Clue characters and play.’” The entire event grew out of brainstorming about costumes.
Each librarian at the branch will dress as a character in the game. The characters and a narrator will be stationed in different parts of the library to assist patrons in their experience of solving the mystery based on clues from lock boxes and other activities.
“We built a life-sized Clue board set up with cards, and we invented all these crazy weapons. Our favorite one is the rolling cart that we shelve books with,” Larson said with a giggle. “There will be an escape room and lock boxes and people will be invited to go around and solve the mystery.”
Additional activities include a showing of “Clue” the movie, Halloween puzzles and word searches, a craft for preschoolers, and prizes for winners. “It’s just going to be a fun! I love puzzle games, so it’s NOT going to be super easy. The lock boxes actually have four layers that you have to go through to get the clues, and there are key codes. So, it should take a fair bit of time.”
The librarians are very much looking forward to hosting patrons in such a unique and personally creative activity. “We already drew cards. We know who did it, where it happened and what weapon was used,” Larson shared with enthusiasm. “You’ll come check in with our narrator and they will tell you if you guessed it right.”
All supplies are provided. Just wear your costume and “bring a good sense of humor. It’s fun for everyone, somewhere for everyone to get together – adults and kids – and have a good time.”
