“We’re capping it at 32 teams. Spots are filling up quick, so the quicker you can get signed up, the better,” said Marcuss Sainz, president of the Sno-Skippers. Participants can register by texting Megan Sainz at 307-887-6279.

The tournament will follow a double-elimination bracket format. First-place winners will take home $300, while the second and third-place teams will receive $200 and $100, respectively. In addition to competing, attendees can indulge in a taco bar and purchase a variety of drinks, including alcoholic beverages. Teams will also have the chance to buy raffle tickets for prizes, including a Klim avalanche backpack, custom cornhole boards made by Pat McGee, a Polaris 30-quart cooler, and even a Polaris kickback rocker chair.

Founded in the 1980s and revived in recent years, the Sno-Skippers focus on outdoor recreation while advocating for the preservation of public lands. “A lot of the members in the club, their grandparents were actually part of the first club,” Sainz explained. Alongside the fun, the Sno-Skippers emphasize safety and community involvement. Vice President Heath Schmidt noted, “A lot of the fundraising money that we do throughout the community goes back into giving back to the community.” Funds from the tournament will support initiatives like Beacon Check Stations at major trailheads, enhancing safety for snowmobilers.

According to member Megan Sainz, “This cornhole tournament has been our main source of income to give back to the community. It’s a really fun night, and we really appreciate the businesses and individuals who have supported us in the past.” With the money raised, the Sno-Skippers can maintain avalanche beacon check stations, ensuring riders’ safety in high-traffic areas.

For those interested in joining the Sno-Skippers, membership fees are reasonable: $35 for individuals and $55 for families. This also includes membership in the Wyoming Snowmobile State Association (WSSA). The club meets every first Monday of the month at the Afton Fire Station at 7 p.m. “WSSA works for all of the local snowmobile clubs to keep access open in Wyoming,” said Sainz, highlighting the importance of community involvement.

Looking ahead, the Sno-Skippers are also planning an avalanche awareness breakfast at the end of January, offering free breakfast burritos to those who can prove they have their avalanche gear. “It’s crucial to have and properly maintain your avalanche equipment,” Sainz emphasized, underlining the club’s commitment to community safety.

Join the Star Valley Sno-Skippers this Friday at the fairgrounds for a memorable evening of cornhole, food, and community spirit.
