Exciting developments are underway at the Kemmerer Municipal Airport, where recent improvements are nearing completion. City Administrator Brian Muir, in a recent interview on SVI Radio, provided insights into the upgrades funded through a joint powers agreement with the county, including new runway lighting and a wind cone.
The previous runway lighting system, while functional, was outdated and inefficient. Muir described it as “kind of like your old Bibles,” noting that it was decent for melting snow but not bright or efficient enough for modern safety standards. The new LED lights being installed promise to enhance visibility while also being more energy-efficient. “It’s wrapping up,” Muir confirmed, as the airport is close to receiving its certificate of substantial completion for the project.
Chad Nelson, the airport manager, has collaborated closely with JVP Engineering to ensure the success of these improvements. “It has been a great project,” Muir stated, highlighting the teamwork involved. These updates come at a critical time as the city looks to enhance the airport’s role as an economic driver for the community.
Muir expressed aspirations for future growth, stating, “We have some plans, and we’re going to take some small steps.” While acknowledging that Kemmerer’s airport may not match larger facilities, he emphasized the importance of positioning it as an economic asset.
At a recent meeting on the TerraPower project, discussions also touched on how to integrate the airport into broader economic strategies for the region. The overall goal is to create a stronger airport economy, which could lead to increased traffic and economic opportunities for the area.
With these improvements and plans on the horizon, the Kemmerer Airport is poised for growth and plays a crucial role in the community’s economic development efforts. As these enhancements come to fruition, residents and local businesses can look forward to the airport becoming a more significant presence in the region.
