Lady Braves begin quest for fourth state title

By Dahl Erickson

The Star Valley Lady Braves wrestlers began their schedule toward a fourth Wyoming state team title as they hosted their annual ‘Brawl’ event this past Thursday with teams from Idaho, Utah and Wyoming in attendance at SVHS.

In the team scores, Star Valley and Thunder Ridge were the top two teams with the visitors taking the championship with 277.0 team points. The Lady Braves finished with 243.5 points, led by a pair of championship brackets.

“It was a great event, our girls went out and did really well,” replied head coach Jeff Anderson. “From competing to the level that we expected them to and [technique], they showed really well from what we worked on early in the season. You make your goals for the season and maybe some of the girls had a goal of a perfect season but sometimes its a relief to not have a perfect season on your head, now they’re ok to just go out and wrestle.”

Carlee Angell won the 110 weight class and Remington Aullman won the 135 weight class as tournament champions.

Abbygale Sanderson (135) and Cara Andrews (145) each got to the finals and finished second. Constance Peterson (110), Kelandry Johnson (115), Sophia Bauer (135), Oakley Hepworth (140), Settelly Roberts (155) and Brooke Schwab (170) all placed third.

Thunder Ridge and Star Valley go at it again on Tuesday night.

“They’re a really tough team,” Anderson added. “In 2024 they are first and last year they were fourth and had a state champ and a couple placers. They have a large roster. As we took off our numbers helped a lot and Thunder Ridge has a lot too As we face them in a dual, we match up pretty well.”

This dual may also include what promises to be several contested rematches with some Star Valley wrestlers falling to Thunder Ridge during the tournament.

“I think Brooke and Oakley and Cara would like a rematch so they’re ready to go back out and try and do better,” Anderson said. “So we’ll see if they line up with them again. “

The Lady Braves will make their final pre-holiday tournament run to Worland this Friday and Saturday for the Battle in the Bighorns.

“We haven’t been to this tournament before,” Anderson noted. “There are teams that will be ranked and we hope to work out some seeding criteria. We may not see them again until the Ron Thon. But we want to see where we’re at against the in-state competition.”
