Are you a mystery lover? Do you enjoy puzzles, riddles, conundrums, or secrets? If so, there is a holiday made just for you: National Sherlock Holmes Day is celebrated on May 22, 2026. This annual celebration honors the birthday of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the brilliant mind behind one of literature’s most enduring detectives.

National Sherlock Holmes Day has been celebrated for nearly 13 years, beginning in 2013, and its popularity continues to grow among readers, writers, and mystery lovers nationwide. It’s a chance to revisit classic tales, test your own deductive reasoning, and appreciate the lasting influence of Holmes and his trusted companion, Dr. John Watson. Many fans also use the day to share favorite quotes, recommend stories, or introduce new readers to the world of mystery and suspense.

Although it may be surprising, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote the Sherlock Holmes series nearly 150 years ago. Despite the passage of time, these stories remain widely read and deeply influential. Sherlock Holmes consists of 4 novels and 56 short stories, which were later compiled into 5 books of short story collections. These works introduced readers to the sharp observational skills and logical reasoning that define Sherlock Holmes, who has since become one of the most recognizable characters in fiction. His ability to notice the smallest details and draw powerful conclusions continues to fascinate audiences of all ages.

Beyond their entertainment value, the Sherlock Holmes series is widely considered to be a milestone in literary history, where detective fiction was revolutionized. This is due to the author pioneering the use of practical and realistic forensic science in fictional literature, such as fingerprints, bloodstain analysis, and ballistics. These elements helped shape how crimes are solved in stories today and even influenced real-world investigative techniques. You may even be able to find some of Sir Auther Conan Doyle’s influence in some of your favorite detective mysteries today.

National Sherlock Holmes Day is the perfect excuse to dive into a good mystery. Whether you pick up a classic Holmes story, challenge yourself with a puzzle, or watch a modern adaptation, there are countless ways to celebrate. You might even gather friends or family for a mystery-themed activity or book discussion. So, this May 22, take a moment to channel your inner detective. Various Sherlock Holmes books and movies can be checked out throughout the Lincoln County Library System.
