The Town of Afton is currently inviting applications to fill a recently vacated council seat following the resignation of Councilperson Michael Butler. Mayor Jeff Jensen, during an interview on the Weekday Wake-up, emphasized the importance of community involvement in this decision and encouraged residents to consider stepping forward.

Butler’s decision to resign stems from a need to devote more time to his business endeavors. The vacancy officially took effect at the end of 2025, marking an opportunity for new voices to join the council in ongoing efforts to improve the community.

Mayor Jensen clarified that the selected council member will serve a one-year term, with a two-year position available for election on the ballot in the upcoming November election. This provides an accessible pathway for those interested in participating in local governance without a long-term commitment initially.

To apply, residents must visit the Town of Afton office, where applications can be obtained. The requirements include being a registered voter, living within the municipal boundaries, and being over 18 years old. Mayor Jensen noted that the application process is straightforward, consisting of only a few questions.

The council aims to finalize the selection of a new member at the January council meeting on January 13, 2026. Mayor Jensen encouraged potential applicants to submit their applications as soon as possible to ensure they are considered in this important decision-making process.
