This summer, Afton will host an important event: The Wall That Heals, a traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund located in Washington, D.C. Scheduled for display from July 9 to 12, 2026, this impactful memorial spans 375 feet—the length of a football field—and rises to 7.5 feet. It will provide a space for reflection and healing for veterans, their families, the entire community and travelers.

The mission of The Wall That Heals is to bring the experience of the national memorial to those unable to visit Washington, D.C. Open 24 hours a day and free of charge, it ensures that everyone has access to this significant tribute.

To successfully host this event, community support is essential. A minimum of 200 volunteers will be needed for various tasks during the wall’s display. Anyone interested in volunteering can reach out to Lisa Grimsley at the Town of Afton (307-885-9831) or Jay Conley (307-248-1861).

Additionally, several committees have been established to assist with planning. They are seeking chairs, especially for the Logistics & Utilities, Sponsorship/Fundraising, and Marketing committees. If you’re eager to make a difference in this vital community initiative, consider stepping forward to lead one of these committees.

Donations to support The Wall That Heals can be sent to: Wyoming Welcomes The Wall That Heals, PO Box 876, Afton, WY 83110.

For inquiries, interested individuals can email WYwelcomesTWTH@yahoo.com. A website will be launched by the end of January to provide updates and facilitate volunteer sign-ups.

The Wall That Heals not only serves as a tribute but also as a healing space for Vietnam veterans and their families. Lisa Grimsley noted in an interview that hosting the wall is a great honor for the community. Jay Conley added, “This is more than just an event; it’s a meaningful moment for honoring those who served. As a combat veteran myself, I deeply understand the value of recognizing our heroes. The Wall That Heals provides a hero’s welcome home.”

In preparation for this event, community involvement will be vital. From securing necessary funding to managing logistics, every contribution will make a difference in creating a meaningful experience for all. The organizers aim to attract visitors from larger cities like Salt Lake City and Boise, turning this into an opportunity for collective remembrance and reflection.
