Star Valley High School’s Jazz Band earned Superior 1 ratings at the University of Wyoming Jazz Festival early this week in Laramie. As part of the festival, the nineteen musicians were instructed by master teachers and evaluated by judges.

“Our Jazz Band did a wonderful job at the UW Jazz Festival,” said SVHS Band Director, Kurt Sand. “Our onstage judge was very positive in his feedback.”

Following the band’s adjudicated stage performance, the band received a 30-minute clinic with the second judge who instructed the musicians in “playing with confidence” and committing to the jazz stylization of a “swing feel” in their music.

Following the clinic, band members divided into sectional groups and participated in Instrument Master Classes with UW faculty and guest artists.
