Day 2 State Wrestling Recap: Lady Braves lead by 50; Parry Bros. into the Finals

Day 2 of the Wyoming State Wrestling Championships have been completed and the Star Valley wrestling community has a combined six different grapplers into the finals in the boys and girls divisions. 

The Lady Braves are in line to claim their fourth consecutive team title as they lead the Girls division by 50 points heading into the final day. Star Valley has 135.5 team points with Green River second at 85.5. Pinedale and Sherian are tied for third  with 81. 

The Star Valley girls had five wrestlers into the semifinals and three of them advanced to the championship match for Saturday. Remington Aullman, who won last year as a junior, will try and repeat at 135 pounds after defeating Jocelyn Shantz of Green River by fall (:38). Aullman also advanced to the finals as a sophomore. Cara Andrews, who won a title as a sophomore, will also be trying for a second individual title at 145 pounds after defeating Eve Stahl of Evanston by fall (4:28). By advancing to the finals, Andrews becomes the Lady Braves’ first four-time finalist. Brooke Schwab (170) advanced into the finals after defeating Kohlee Shoun of Hulett by tech fall (17-0). 

Carlee Angell (100) lost a heartbreaker in her semifinal match by sudden victory to Peyton Arnhold of Shoshoni. Oakley Hepworth (130) also fell in the semifinal round in a close finish to Bianca Maez of Green River by decision (10-8). 

Aullman will be battling McKayla Lym of Lyman for the title. Andrews will face Dani Grooms of Sheridan at 145 and Schwab will see Ashten Hubbs of Cody.

• The Braves climbed two spots from where they sat at the end of Day 1 and now stand in third place in the 4A classification with 136.5 team points. Thunder Basin leads the team race with 220.5 with Natrona County a distant second at 154. Cheyenne East is close behind Star Valley with 131. 

Caleb Lawrence (120), Kimball Parry (132) and Tel Parry (144)  advanced into the finals. Lawrence is going for his first state championship while Kimball Parry is trying for his third. Tel Parry will have the chance to become Star Valley’s first ever four-time individual champion on Saturday night. 

Lawrence defeated Isaias McDonald of Cheyenne East by major decision (11-1) to earn his trip the finals. Kimball Parry defeated Trace Eldridge of Cheyenne East by fall (3:25) and Tel Parry won by tech fall (19-1) over Rylee Browen of Thunder Basin. 

Tel will be facing Santiago Cruz of Rock Springs in the Finals. Kimball will also be facing a Rock Springs wrestler at 132 in Lincoln Young. Lawrence, a standout freshman who is looking to follow in the footsteps of both Parry brothers by winning a title in his first state tournament, will face Lucas Stirling of Thunder Basin. 

Three other Braves wrestled in the semifinals but had to taste defeat. Cooper Sessions (113), lost by tech fall (18-1) to Bentley Johnson of Green River. Kolbe Merritt lost to William Alt of Kelly Walsh by fall (3:46) and Ei Matautia lost to Lukas Balfanz of Campbell County by fall (1:57). All three are assured of placing at least sixth and can improve on their placing on Saturday.
