The Animal Humane Society of Star Valley, known to most as Lucky’s Place, says it costs an average of $276,000 annually to operate a nonprofit animal shelter — which highlights the importance of community donations.

This past week, Lucky’s held a virtual Winter Ball to help with the cost for the shelter. According to Kelly Meyer, the organization’s social media manager, over $1600 was raised.

The virtual event encouraged supporters to donate the amount they might typically spend attending an in-person gala. A cost-breakdown of attending in-person gave the public an idea of how much they might choose to donate, though every bit helps:

New outfit: $150

Fuel: $50

Ticket: $100

Pet/Child Sitter: $75

Elizabeth Ice, Animal Care Specialist stands with Flynn. Flynn is about a year old and loves attention. He knows how to sit and shake, and he’ll happily lean in for every bit of affection. Being close to his people is his favorite place to be. Because of a difficult past, he can be unsure at first—especially around men—but with patience and kindness, he bonds deeply and truly wants to be a good boy. He does well with calm dogs and even cats. The shelter environment is overwhelming for this sensitive pup. Donations made to the shelter in lieu of the ball will be allocated toward food, supplies, and medical expenses for animals that have been rescued by Lucky’s Place from different situations including homelessness, abuse, and/or abandonment in Star Valley.

Lucky’s Place employees shared their gratitude for those supporters of the shelter saying, “Your generous donations are the heartbeat of our no-kill shelter, enabling us to offer a second chance to countless animals who might otherwise face a bleak future.”

Every cent donated makes a difference to Lucky’s Place and the animals that are in their care.

Meyer said the shelter is continually seeking ways to engage the community.

“We’re always trying to figure out how we invite the community in a variety of ways,” says Meyer.

As warmer months approach, bringing more events and opportunities to spotlight the shelter’s work, Lucky’s Place leaders say they look forward to partnering with the community to support animals in need across Star Valley.

“Together, we create a haven of hope, safety, and healing for those who need it most, making miracles happen with your compassionate support for the animals we serve here in Star Valley Wyoming, and beyond.”
