Star Valley Speech and Debate attendees saw growth and success as they competed in the Wyoming State Speech Tournament held at Cheyenne Central over the weekend.

Assistant coach Priscilla Greenwell shared highlights from the event, including the head captain’s advancement from Congressional Debate to Super Congress. Cooper Daniel, a senior, serves as a state ambassador for speech and debate in Wyoming. He received an Ambassador Award and was also named an Academic All-American by the National Speech & Debate Association.

According to the organization, “the All American award is based on a combination of competitive and service points, of which no more than 25% of the point total can include service. In order to qualify, a student must have competed once at Nationals. Following the National Speech & Debate Tournament, the 25 students with the highest total points in our Honor Society receive this recognition.”

Sophomore and junior captain, Brooklyn Bach advance to quarter-finals in the Lincoln-Douglas Debate; Duo Marie Bateman, senior captain, and Chloe Goodson also advanced to the semi-finals.

Traveling for the tournament didn’t come easy. The team battled rough winds and winter weather conditions while making the long trip across the state, facing road closures and extended hours on the bus. Despite the challenges, including power outages and delays along the way, the group arrived safely thanks to bus driver Jon Passey, whose efforts ensured the team made it to Cheyenne and back home.

“Even with the crazy weather, power outages and long bus ride to and from this tournament, these students worked hard and it shows,” Greenwell said.

“Even if I don’t win or take first,” shared Bailey Sperry, social media captain, “I made a difference to someone who listened to my piece and that makes me really happy.”

With hours of research and practice, these students have proven what their hard work can accomplish.

Head Coach Katie Roberts shared, “I’m so proud of the students of their hard work and wonderful attitude this season. I’m also especially grateful for my assistant coaches and all of our drivers with the transportation department. It takes a village to help these kids as well and we have an amazing one along with the support of the administration.”
