Those who have worked closely with Sgt. Kim Cooper highlight key traits he consistently demonstrated during his 30-year law enforcement career,  with the last 20 being at the Afton Police Department.

Behind-the-scenes interactions often help define the character of those who work to keep communities safe and uphold the law. Cooper is one who did so with respect for others.

Afton Police Chief Jason Romberg has worked with Cooper since December 2016. Chief Romberg shared his respect for Cooper, saying, “He’s very dedicated to the profession… He treated people the way he would want to be treated if he were in their shoes.”

Dispatch staff also noted his ability to be a friend to anyone — even those he had to arrest.

“He treated everyone like they were people, not like a criminal,” said Kaydence Johnson of dispatch.

Johnson and Dispatch Supervisor Maryanne Christensen said they appreciated Cooper’s follow-up communication to help “give clarity” and process difficult calls. They said his efforts provided closure and ensured dispatchers understood what happened after 911 calls and emergency responses.

With Cooper’s recent retirement, Christensen said simply, “He deserves it.”

Another commonly mentioned trait was Cooper’s memory and storytelling ability.

“He’s got the memory of an elephant,” said Romberg. “He is trustworthy and loyal.”

Romberg also emphasized Cooper’s role in the department, saying he “kept the department together” before the current chief was hired.

Cooper had a quiet last day on March 31.

“He will be sorely missed. He has earned this, and we wish him the best on this new adventure.”
