Star Valley teams place 3rd at Regionals as more records fall

• State Track is this weekend in Casper

Unlike the last time Star Valley High School hosted a regional track event, the weather was very cooperative and great marks and times were made not just for the host school but for many athletes visiting the area.

In the team race, Natrona County claimed both titles with 218 points for their girls team and 150 for their boys. Kelly Walsh was second on the girls wide with 191 points and Star Valley was third with 106. Evanston finished second on the boys side with 134 points and the Braves were third with 120.

Coach Ty Draney praised the effort of his team and the volunteers and staff who hosted the event.

“We felt like we loved everybody’s competitiveness,” he answered. “There’s an extra element of pressure of hosting an event like that. We are appreciative of the staff and volunteers who did all the work. The kids got to sleep in their own beds and came out and performed well.”

Individually, sophomore Kelsie Dunne claimed two events by winning both the 800 and 1600 meter runs. Junior Tylita Bond won the 3200 meter run and Abigail Carillo-Zarate shattered her own shot put record by throwing 42’8.25” to win the the event. This broke her own mark by nearly three and a half feet.

The boys shot put record fell as well with Elijah Matautia shattering the previous mark with a heave of 56’ 10.25”. The previous record was set by Sam Gertsch (53’ 11.5”) in 2014. Other event winners for the boys included Brigham Hahn taking the 800 meter run, Sullivan Wilson winning the 3200 meter run and Sam Gaskell placing first in the high jump. Colton Cranney, Luke Harris and Wilson went 1-2-3 in the 1600 meter run.

In addition to the shot put records falling, sophomore Jonah McClure’s leap of 22’ 7” in the long jump broke one of the oldest records for the school as he went a half-inch farther than Charlie Clinger’s previous record set in 1994. The oldest record on the books is now Casey Jackson’s pole vault height of 13’ 6”, also set in 1994.

“We had three records broken,” Draney added.”The throws records are less of a surprise with how things have been going, then Jonah breaks Charlie’s long jump record. Uso ended up breaking the shot put record. You appreciate just how good some of the relays are with the field of kids that are in it. We had three throwers over 165 feet. Brigham [Hahn] running down those kids in the 4×400 and moving up to second was an all-time memory. Just some great competition this weekend.”

Draney also noted that this year’s crop of qualifiers is a bit larger than average.

“I feel like we came out pretty unscathed,” he added. “I think we have 34 kids going this week so that’s exciting. Our average has been closer to 20-25 range. We left some points on the table at regionals and hope to add to that at state. We’ll need all hands on deck to have a good day. But that’s the fun of it. I love lining up against the very best. Teams like Sheridan, Central and East. That’s why we do it.”

Thunder Basin won the 4A East girls team title with 173 points, edging Sheridan who had 170.5. The Broncs handily won the boys team title with 204.5. Cheyenne East was second with 151.5.

The Wyoming State Track & Field Championships take place this weekend in Casper at Kelly Walsh High School. The Braves finished as the 4A runner-up last season with 105.5 points. The Lady Braves placed 14th with 12 points in 2025. The last title for the girls came in 2017 while the boys last won it all in 2018, the last of a three-peat run.
