The historic Golden Rule Store, an iconic establishment in Kemmerer, is set to undergo a significant renovation that promises to breathe new life into the downtown area. During an interview, Jesica Lozier provided insight into the project, highlighting the familial and community ties that make this venture special.

“This is my parents’ project,” Lozier stated, as she discussed the reconstruction efforts currently underway. “They’re in the structural repair stage, focusing on making the building structurally sound.”

The Golden Rule Store has suffered from roof leaks, which led to deterioration of its rock walls. “The walls are about four feet wide, which is pretty cool. They’re very big and thin at the top, so it’s been interesting,” she added. The renovation includes constructing a new interior shell that will support a fresh roof while retaining the original rock facade, aiming to keep the exterior as close to its 1903 appearance as possible.

The store, one of the oldest buildings in the area, will honor local history with exhibits from the JCPenney Foundation planned for the lobby and a plaque designating it as a historical site. “A lot of people have come with some really cool history,” Lozier pointed out.

As for the renovations’ future, the plans include a small event space featuring a restored Art Deco stage, which was previously part of the building. “It’ll be perfect for smaller events like anniversary parties or baby showers,” she explained. Additionally, the store will incorporate three to four retail spaces and office areas, aiming to revitalize the downtown district.

“It’s going to bring life back to the triangle and the whole downtown area,” Lozier explained, inviting potential business owners to consider the available spaces. “If there are people wanting to open a retail business, start thinking about it. We’ll build it out for them.”

Lozier also addressed the timeline for the project. “We’re finishing the structural component now, and the plans are still at the architect. We hope to have everything completed in the next month, going through fire marshal and engineering processes afterward.” While they aim for a completion date by fall 2026, Lozier noted that the fire marshal process can be lengthy, emphasizing a hopeful opening by early 2027.

Lozier concluded, “To have something original come back to Kemmerer is exciting for everybody. We’re thrilled for the entire community.”
