Verdene was a woman of remarkable determination and warmth. She graduated from Jordan High School and later pursued higher education at Utah State University, where she earned a master’s degree in education. These ventures brought her many humorous experiences that she loved to share with friends and family.

Her faith was an essential part of her life. A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served in many callings throughout the years and was an active member of the Nibley 4th Ward.

Doris Jenkins

Doris Jenkins

Doris Lucille Hibbard Jenkins, loving mother, sister, and grandmother, passed away at age 96 on Monday March 4, 2025, in Clarkston, Utah with her daughter Beverly by her side.

Lucille was born September 6, 1928, in Regina Saskatchewan, Canada. She was the second of three daughters born to Elsie Olive Doughty and Stanley Borden Hibbard.

She was a young girl during the depression so she learned to do many things. As a family they all worked together to build a home, raise a large garden, and preserve their food. In the summer they would go to visit her grandparents in Nipawin and then out to the country homestead to help her Grandma Hibbard. The girls would stay for a few weeks and help with gardening, canning, and chores. These skills would prove essential for her adult life.

She joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints when she was 13 years old. She and her family were actively involved in their small branch. Lucille was called to be the young women’s president at age 16.

She graduated from Grade 12 (as it was called in Canada) and went on to business college, becoming a bookkeeper and stenographer. She worked for a plumbing supply house and a stationary and paper company.

In the fall of 1951 Lucille, Kay, and a few friends decided to attend Brigham Young University in Provo. While serving in the university cafeteria she became acquainted with a young man from Freedom Wyoming who knew a former missionary that served in Western Canada. She asked the young man to tell Elder Jenkins “Hi from Lucille Hibbard”. Elder Jenkins told him to go back and get her phone number, That started their courtship.

On October 30, 1952 Theras Ira Jenkins and Lucille Doris Hibbard were married in the Cardston Alberta temple.

They lived on the Idaho side of Freedom where all 12 of their children were raised. It was a full time job keeping up with the growing family, cooking on a wood stove, and using a wringer washer and clothes line to maintain the large amounts of laundry.

Lucille had a deep testimony and great love for the gospel. She appreciated being able to listen to the General Conference addresses, was diligent about doing so, and would remind her children what a blessing it was to listen live instead of having to wait for the printed edition to be released.

She had a great desire to do genealogy research and find her ancestors since she was a first generation member. There were many temple trips made to do work for the ancestors she had researched. She worked in the Afton Wyoming Family History Center for years and was the Freedom ward genealogy specialist. She taught in the primary program most of her life and loved serving the children.

Lucille enjoyed crocheting, embroidering, making quilts, gardening, and reading many kinds of literature. She taught herself how to play a few hymns on the piano and would frequently play “Nearer My God to Thee” one of Theras’ favorites.

She is survived by her children; Doris (Chris) Barney, Rosalee Nielsen, Lynden Jenkins, Beverly (Jerry) Godfrey, Sherman Jenkins, Edward Jenkins, Tad (Michelle) Jenkins, William (Linda) Jenkins, Jeannette (Fred) Laird, Charlotte (Robert) Jenkins, Borden (Tori) Jenkins, 38 grandchildren, 62 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by younger sister Kay Muir, sister-in-law Rose Ellen Jenkins, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband Theras Ira Jenkins, parents, older sister Velma Collins, son Brad Jenkins, and several nieces and nephews.

A viewing will be held March 13, 2025 at 6pm-7:30pm at the Clarkston Utah Ward Chapel. A second viewing will be held at the Freedom Wyoming Ward Chapel on Friday March 14, 2025 at 11am-12:30pm. Funeral services will be held at the same location at 1pm. Internment will be in the Freedom Idaho Cemetery beside her husband and son.
