Violet Sanderson, Afton’s Town Administrator, joined the Weekday Wake-up last Thursday to provide listeners with important updates on infrastructure projects and park enhancements in the community.

Sanderson highlighted the ongoing sewer lagoon expansion, which is set to wrap up in the next few weeks. “We’re on the tail end of getting all those last-minute things completed,” she noted, expressing enthusiasm for this long-term project, which has benefited from a substantial state grant.

In addition to the sewer initiative, Sanderson reported on the progress of the Adams Street mainline water project, with individual service connections starting last week. This project will replace the water line between 5th and 6th on Adams Street and is also nearing completion.

She also addressed recent difficulties in securing bids for road maintenance projects. Although the town initially received no bids, new proposals have come in and will be reviewed by the council next week. The planned maintenance will include regrading, crack sealing, and chip sealing to improve local road conditions.

During her update, Sanderson underscored the significance of proactive planning, stating, “And like we’ve said before, it’s a 20-year expansion project. So it was basically us looking at what sort of growth we’re going to see in the next 20 years and putting in the infrastructure to be able to support that.”

On the parks front, Sanderson shared exciting news about the resurfacing of tennis courts to create new pickleball courts, with work set to begin on August 18, providing an additional recreational option for the community.

As summer gives way to fall, Sanderson mentioned there are no new major capital improvement projects planned beyond those already discussed. However, the town is gearing up to update its master plan, last revised in 2008, to better reflect the current economic landscape and growth.

The ongoing public survey regarding the downtown corridor will also be integrated into the master plan. Sanderson emphasized the necessity of a comprehensive plan to support proposed changes, particularly concerning safety and accessibility along Main Street, which doubles as a highway.

In a recent jury trial involving the town, Sanderson reported a defense verdict, confirming that Afton was found not liable for negligence. While she acknowledged the plaintiff’s pain, she reassured residents of the town’s commitment to public safety and transparency.

“If anyone has questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to call us at town hall,” Sanderson encouraged, reinforcing Afton’s dedication to open communication with its residents.

As the interview concluded, Sanderson expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to connect with the community and looked forward to providing more updates next month.

For further information on town projects or to give feedback, residents are invited to contact Afton Town Hall.
