Star Valley’s charity organization, Free07, is hosting their 4th annual Pinewood Derby and 2nd annual Cornhole Tournament fundraisers on Saturday, February 7 in the South Exhibit Hall of the Lincoln County Fairgrounds in Afton. Derby registration begins at 10 a.m. with racing to begin immediately following, and Cornhole registration begins at 6 p.m. with the tournament immediately following.

All proceeds from the 2026 fundraising events benefit Roberta Grisamer, who is fighting liver cancer. Ongoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments in Salt Lake City “will hopefully shrink it” and they will “remove the cancer and part of her liver,” explained Free07 committee member Lindsay Kallgren. “She has been a big supporter in a lot of fundraisers in the past and she has helped with ours a couple of times. She has always been one to jump up and help. Let’s give back to her.”

Derby age divisions include Youth 0-8, Youth 9-15 and Adult 16 and older. Classes include a Five Ounce Class, Pro-Stock Class (participants race whoever they want) and Outlaw Class (Anything Goes). Entry fee for the derby is $10 per class.

Interested individuals who need a “last minute” kit to build a car can contact Free07 committee member Kevin Turner at 307-887-0243. The car design “doesn’t have to be anything fancy. It can be a block on wheels. It just has to weigh five ounces or less.”

Trophies will be awarded for winners in each class and for design awards that include Fastest Car, Most Original Car, Best in Show Car and Slowest Car.

The derby has “always been a super fun little get together, especially for the kids” since derbies are less common in recent years. “It’s fun to see the kids enjoying this as much as their fathers do.”

The cornhole tournament is something the organization began doing last year. “Cornhole is super popular and pretty easy to plan.” While partners in the cornhole tournament were assigned by the organization last year, participants can bring their own partners this year. Entry fee per cornhole team is $40 and includes one raffle ticket.

Both events offer a hot dog and chips meal available for purchase as well as donated silent auction and raffle items. The headliner raffle item is a Heritage .22 revolver pistol. Free07 committee members hope that the public will respond positively to the fundraiser by fully participating.

“There might be a cash prize” for the cornhole winners, “depending on how many participants we have,” said Kallgren. “We don’t want to take away from donations to the family.”

Free07 continues to prioritize meeting the needs of community members that need a little extra support. Kallgren said, “We just like giving back to the community and helping out where we can.”
