SVI Radio Interview: Nicki Bartleson, Mady Mosgeller & Coach Scherbal – Star Valley Brave Cadettes

Left to right: Coach Scherbal, Mady Mosgeller, Nicki Bartleson.

Star Valley High School Brave Cadette Coach Kyli Scherbal along with Captains Nicki Bartleson and Mady Mosgeller stepped into the SVI Radio studio on Thursday, February 26 to promote auditions for next year’s team.

Auditions take place March 3-5 from 4-6 p.m. at Star Valley Middle School. Anyone with questions can contact Coach Scherbal via email at kyli.scherbel@lcsd2.org.

(0:00) And joining me live in studio, (0:02) some members of the Star Valley Brave Cadets (0:05) here with me today. (0:06) Captain Nikki Bartleson, (0:07) co-captain Maddie Moss-Geller in studio, (0:10) head coach Kylie Scherbel also with us today. (0:13) Ladies, good morning.

(0:14) How’s everybody doing so far today? (0:16) So good? (0:16) Yeah. Great. (0:17) Yeah, so good.

(0:18) Better in about maybe 10 minutes (0:21) when this is all done. (0:22) I’ll tell you, this is so much easier (0:24) than standing in front of a crowd full of an event center (0:27) and dancing in front of everybody. (0:29) So it’s just me, nobody else is even here.

(0:31) It’s just me, it’s all good. (0:32) Well, really appreciate you guys coming in. (0:35) Nikki, let’s start with you, senior captain.

(0:38) How many years have you done Brave Cadets (0:39) in high school, all four? (0:41) No, I actually didn’t do my junior year (0:44) because I had back surgery, so. (0:46) Oh, excuses, excuses. (0:50) Why Brave Cadets? (0:52) What got you into it as a freshman? (0:54) You know, I just, ever since I was a little kid, (0:56) I just have always watched the Brave Cadets (0:58) and I love dancing, you know? (1:01) So I was like, I need to be a part of that.

(1:04) And I don’t know, it’s been great. (1:06) What have you loved most about it? (1:08) Probably the family that you, like, (1:13) I don’t know, what is the word? (1:15) You gain? (1:16) Yeah, the family you gain. (1:17) Like, each and every year, like, (1:19) they’re just a different team each year (1:21) and you get to see different people, different, (1:26) it’s a great experience.

(1:27) Now, tell me more about the work (1:29) that goes in behind the scenes, right? (1:33) I mean, it starts already, right now. (1:36) I mean, you guys came off of state (1:38) and you’re already still practicing and everything. (1:39) What, how many hours a week would you just guess? (1:44) If we’re talking, like, state, I’d say over 20.

(1:49) A lot. (1:51) I don’t know. (1:52) That’s fine, a lot’s a lot.

(1:52) I feel like when people think of dance, too, (1:54) they just think, like, oh, it’s not a sport, (1:56) you’re just, like, moving around, (1:57) you’re just, like, having fun, which, like, true, (1:59) but, like, you have to work a lot of, like, (2:02) your body, your muscles, you have to, like, it’s crazy. (2:05) And so I just, I kind of get mad at people, like, whatever. (2:08) Well, I won’t say anything then, that’s fine.

(2:12) Nikki, why should other girls try out for Brave Cadets? (2:17) I think that it allows you to grow as a person (2:21) and also be able to stay on the right track, (2:25) you know what I mean? (2:27) Yeah, absolutely. (2:28) Now, as a senior, you’re about to graduate, right? (2:31) So is that settled in yet, or is it still kind of weird? (2:34) I don’t know, I’m still a little, I don’t know, it’s crazy. (2:38) Yeah, it goes fast, right? (2:39) It does.

(2:40) What advice would you give to maybe the younger girls (2:45) coming up through the program? (2:49) Even if you’re scared, do it. (2:52) Yeah. (2:53) Like, there’s really, and even if it, like, (2:54) gets hard, like, there will be times, (2:56) especially, like, when you’re, like, new, (2:58) like, your freshman year, it’s gonna be, like, (3:00) really tough, and you’re gonna be, like, (3:02) I don’t wanna do this anymore, like, (3:03) this is, like, a lot of work, but, like, (3:05) you get used to it, and it’s, like, I don’t know.

(3:08) Yeah, absolutely. (3:09) Well, that’s Nikki Bartleson in studio this morning, (3:11) one of the Brave Cadets. (3:13) Maddie Moskeller also in studio, (3:14) just a sophomore and co-captain.

(3:16) Maddie, what have you liked most (3:20) about being a part of the Brave Cadets? (3:22) I really just love dancing, (3:24) but this year especially, I love the team. (3:27) We’ve definitely created a big group of sisters, (3:30) and it was incredible. (3:32) I love dancing in front of crowds.

(3:34) It’s such a different kind of adrenaline rush, (3:36) and it’s, I just love it so much. (3:38) Was there a dance this year that you enjoyed (3:41) more than the others? (3:42) What was your favorite dance? (3:44) I don’t know, I really like them all. (3:47) All their jazz routines that we’ve done (3:48) throughout the season have a special place in my heart, (3:50) but hip hop is always just so fun, so I don’t really know.

(3:54) It’s a crowd favorite, too, right? (3:56) Yes. (3:57) All right, so you guys had the uniform this year. (4:01) I will admit I have daughters who dance, (4:04) but I’m still trying to figure things out, right? (4:06) So which one was it where you had the lights (4:08) on the uniform? (4:09) Which dance was that? (4:09) State hip hop.

(4:10) Was that the hip hop? (4:12) All right, that was a cool touch. (4:14) How did that work? (4:15) Where did the lights come from? (4:16) Give us the secret behind the scenes. (4:18) So, this was a fun and exciting.

(4:21) We found out that we were gonna have lights (4:23) when we were learning state hip hop over the summer. (4:26) We did not know if the lights were gonna become a reality (4:29) for a very long time, but we got our lights, (4:32) and in our vests, we had a cute little pocket on the side (4:35) where we had a cute little battery pack. (4:37) And then, luckily enough, we were able to be able (4:40) to turn on that battery pack from the outside (4:42) of our vests during our dance.

(4:45) So it was all just a big battery pack in our vests (4:48) that we had to learn how to hide through our tumbling. (4:51) It’s a cool wow moment. (4:52) It’s the wow factor.

(4:53) I thought it was pretty awesome. (4:55) All right, Maddie, why would you recommend (4:58) that other girls try out for Brave Cadets? (5:02) Being on Brave Cadets gives you an entirely different, (5:05) new confidence boost, and it’s something I had never expected (5:08) in my freshman year, but they should also join (5:10) because it’s so fun, and you’re gonna make new friends, (5:13) and it’s gonna be a different kind of bond (5:15) that you don’t have with anyone else. (5:18) Absolutely.

(5:19) That’s Maddie Moskiller this morning in studio. (5:21) Also head coach, Kylie Scherbel in studio. (5:25) Kylie, first out of the gate, (5:26) wanna just give you a chance to brag (5:28) about the two specifically that you brought in today (5:30) and in your captains.

(5:31) Tell us more about Nikki and Maddie. (5:33) That’s easy. (5:35) I love these two.

(5:37) I love our whole team. (5:38) These two, they picked up this season as captains (5:43) and just ran with it, and they work so well together, (5:47) and they just assumed this position so easily and quickly, (5:53) and they created that family out of their team. (5:57) They really did.

(5:59) And so it’s definitely, (6:02) losing Nikki is gonna be really hard, (6:05) but we’re glad that we still have Maddie. (6:07) And they are just the tip of the top (6:11) when it comes to attitude and talent. (6:16) I mean, they’re just the total package.

(6:20) And they’ve created that in our whole team as well. (6:24) Like every single kid on our team (6:27) has learned from their example, (6:29) and they really are just all the very best of the best (6:33) in attitude and character and everything. (6:37) That aside, they both made our all-conference tryouts.

(6:43) They worked really hard for that. (6:45) It was really scary. (6:47) And they went into a new program (6:51) where they had to audition (6:53) against all the other dancers in the state, (6:55) and they were in the top 19.

(6:59) And now they get to audition for All-State on March 14th, (7:04) and that’s gonna be really cool. (7:05) They get to do that over in Casper. (7:10) And it’s just a really cool opportunity for them (7:13) to be able to take home that title.

(7:15) And they just work really hard. (7:19) And yeah, their attitudes, their hard work, (7:22) their support of their team members, (7:24) of themselves in general, (7:25) and of their coaches is just, it’s unreal. (7:29) It’s just unreal.

(7:30) Well, congratulations on all-conference. (7:32) Best of luck at All-State. (7:34) So, Kylie, we gotta talk about tryouts happening next week.

(7:38) Tell us how this is gonna work. (7:40) Dates, times, places, who it’s for, and everything. (7:42) It is for everybody.

(7:44) Boys, girls, friends, family, whatever you wanna bring. (7:48) Just bring yourself, (7:49) and it doesn’t matter your dance experience. (7:52) It doesn’t matter anything.

(7:53) If you wanna dance, let’s get you in there (7:55) and teach you how, or let’s watch you be amazing already. (8:00) We just, it’ll be the March 3rd through the 5th. (8:06) That’s a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.

(8:09) And it’s from four to six p.m. (8:12) at the Star Valley Middle School. (8:15) We just, we needed to do it over there for space purposes, (8:20) and I think it’ll work out great. (8:23) And yeah, we want everybody to feel like (8:25) they can come and try out.

(8:26) We feel like we want our family to be even bigger, (8:31) and it’s a good group of girls to rub shoulders with, (8:35) so we just wanna make our team as big and happy as possible. (8:40) What do the tryouts look like? (8:42) What should a dancer expect when they show up for that? (8:44) Especially the first day, right? (8:46) Well, you know, we look for good attitude, (8:49) good work ethic, and how much you progress. (8:54) And the first day, we’ll go over (8:59) warming up appropriately and making sure (9:03) that girls are taking care of their bodies, (9:06) because safety is really important.

(9:08) And then we’ll get right into it. (9:11) We’ll do a little bit of technique, (9:12) some teaching of the different skills that we’ll have (9:17) during our tryout, turns and leaps and flexibility. (9:21) But we will teach you what you need to know that day.

(9:27) And then we’ll start in with the routine (9:30) that we’re gonna be having you learn. (9:32) And it’s a short routine, but it’ll be great for tryouts. (9:38) I think you’ll love it.

(9:40) And we aren’t gonna give you anything (9:42) too incredibly advanced, but definitely something (9:48) that will show us how hard you work from day to day. (9:52) That’s what we really wanna see, (9:53) is how hard you work from day to day (9:55) and how much you progress. (9:57) Rave Cadet Dance Tryouts March 3rd through the 5th (10:00) next week, four to six p.m. at Star Valley Middle School.

(10:02) Make sure you bring your physical, right? (10:04) Gotta have those every year. (10:06) And if anyone has questions, how do they contact you? (10:11) Yeah, you contact me by email. (10:14) My email is all over the internet.

(10:18) It’s kylee.sherbell at lcsd2.org. (10:22) And you’re welcome to reach out to me. (10:26) Perfect. (10:26) Okay, so if you have any questions, (10:29) kylee.sherbell at lcsd2.org. (10:31) The annual review’s still to be determined on date, (10:34) so stay tuned for that.

(10:35) Anything else we missed that we need to mention today? (10:38) Oh man, just that these kids are amazing. (10:41) I think it’s worth saying all the good stuff. (10:45) They’ve come a long way (10:47) and they’ve gotten their Spirit Award two years in a row.

(10:54) Got the Academic Award this year. (10:56) They really are the coolest group of kids to hang out with. (10:59) So we want everybody to come and take part in that.

(11:03) We’ve got a lot of really cool things (11:04) coming up this next year. (11:05) Going to different competitions (11:07) and we’re hoping to take these kids over to Disney World (11:11) for their national competition this year. (11:14) And that’ll be a lot of fun.

(11:16) And yeah, that’s what we got going. (11:19) So come and join us. (11:20) Awesome.

(11:21) Again, started by the Brave Cadets in the studio (11:23) this morning. (11:23) Head coach, kylee.sherbell, along with Nikki Bartleson (11:26) and Maddie Moskeller this morning. (11:29) It’s all part of the weekday wake up on SVI Radio.
